Hank Green, the YouTuber behind Vlogbrothers, SciShow and CrashCourse, is pausing three of his projects after acknowledging he relied too heavily on ChatGPT for research. The controversy started when viewers noticed the phrase "I appreciate the pushback" in one of his videos — language closely associated with chatbot responses — and accused him of leaning on AI-generated content. Green, who has spent nearly 20 years building an audience that now spans roughly 32 million YouTube subscribers and 12 million social media followers, initially said the phrase had come out spontaneously.
A fuller apology
Green later issued a more detailed statement, saying he was "mortified" to have let down so many of his viewers and that he now understood how the situation had unfolded. He confirmed he had been using ChatGPT as a research aid more heavily than he should have, and announced he would pause production on three projects: hankschannel, SMUSH and his word-puzzle series 4x3, while he reassesses how AI fits into his process.

The episode arrives as platforms and researchers alike raise concerns about AI's effect on creative and professional work, including its links to workplace burnout and weakened decision-making when relied on too heavily. YouTube, which reaches an estimated 84% of U.S. adults and where users spend more than two hours a day on average, has said reducing so-called "AI slop" and detecting deepfakes are priorities heading into 2026. For a creator whose entire brand is built on trust with a long-running, deeply engaged audience, Green's response suggests he sees the stakes as bigger than one awkward phrase.
