Few silhouettes carry as much baggage as the skinny jean. Anyone who lived through the late 2000s and early 2010s remembers the fight to get them on, the front pockets too tight to hold a phone, and the eventual, gleeful switch to wide-leg everything. Long before that backlash, though, the skin-tight, woven-denim silhouette was a symbol of rock-and-roll and youthful defiance, worn by Elvis Presley and James Dean back in the 1950s.

## How it fell out, and how it's climbing back

Fashion's exit from skinny jeans in the late 2010s was mostly the pendulum doing what it does, quiet luxury to maximalism, mini to maxi, before the pandemic sealed the deal by making comfort the only real priority for a couple of years. The current comeback started on the runway: Michael Rider's Celine debut paired razor-slim pants with oversized boxy blazers, Demna showed painted-on, low-slung skinny denim at Gucci's pre-fall 2026 show, Jonathan Anderson put slim, sharp denim on men at Dior alongside sparkly tanks and rocker layers, and Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons leaned into hip-hugging, retro-leaning skinny lines for Prada's Spring/Summer 2027 menswear.

## A more breathable skinny jean

The 2026 version isn't quite the vacuum-sealed original. It widens slightly past the knee into something closer to a straight or flared line, sleek without cutting off circulation, and the styling does the rest of the work: tucked into knee-high boots, or balanced out with an oversized jacket or blazer on top. Celebrities have already made the case for it both ways, Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid keeping it retro with a raglan tee or plain white tank, Zara Larsson dressing it up with a statement color on top. For anyone still not ready to commit, there's always the option of cutting an old pair down into capris and calling it a compromise.
