Geoje, a coastal city on South Korea's southern tip, took on more than 900 millimeters of rain between August 15 and 17, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration. The downpour set off flooding and landslides across the region, leaving casualties and significant property damage in its wake. Days later, on August 19, city officials confirmed a sizable relief donation from an unlikely but locally significant source: girl group Rescene.

The group's five members, Woni, Liv, Minami, May and Zena, contributed 50 million won directly, while their fanbase, known as Remine, independently raised more than 40 million won on top of that. Combined, the total donation topped 90 million won, or roughly $64,560, all directed toward recovery efforts in Geoje.

## A hometown tie built on a viral catchphrase

The donation lands on top of a connection between Rescene and Geoje that runs deeper than geography. Woni, the group's leader, grew up in the city, and that fact took on a life of its own earlier this year after a video of Woni and fellow member Minami went viral. Dressed in the exaggerated, high-glamour style of Japan's gyaru subculture while wandering Seoul, Woni joked that showing up in Geoje looking like that would get her scolded by the locals. Minami's reply, an enthusiastic "Geoje yaho!", took off as a catchphrase repeated across South Korea, picked up by members of Twice, BigBang and BTS. A follow-up video of the pair actually visiting Woni's hometown pushed the moment further, and local reports credited it with a roughly 300 percent jump in tourism to the city.

## Ambassadors for four hometowns, and a breakout year on the charts

Geoje's mayor, Byeon Gwang-yong, said in a statement that the group's support would give residents comfort as the city works to recover, and that the funds would go toward helping people return to their daily lives. Rescene's members have since taken on informal ambassador roles for each of their home cities: Woni for Geoje, Liv for Suwon, Zena for Gyeongju and May for Goyang. The donation arrives during the strongest stretch of the group's career so far, with 2024 single "Love Attack" reaching the top of South Korea's Melon chart and both "Pretty Girl" and "Deja Vu" climbing into the chart's top five.
