# Flipkart Scrapped Fashion Seller Fees. Now Its Seller Base Is Up 77%.

> Ahead of its biggest sale of the year, Flipkart's fashion marketplace is betting that cutting commissions and chasing Gen Z shoppers, who now make up half its audience, is the way to out-hustle Myntra and the rest of India's apparel market.

Walmart-owned Flipkart eliminated commissions on all fashion products in July, dropping fees that had previously run 14% to 18% per sale. The change appears to be paying off heading into Big Billion Days, the company's biggest annual sale event: Flipkart's fashion seller base has grown 77% this year, new product listings have more than doubled, and transacting selection is up 33%, according to Kapil Thirani, vice-president and head of Flipkart's marketplace and fashion businesses. The platform's curated Next Gen seller programme has also seen three times the seller onboarding over the past six months.

## Betting on India's apparel boom

The timing lines up with a broader growth story in Indian fashion retail: consultancy Redseer projects the country's apparel market will reach $130 billion to $150 billion by 2030, growing 10% to 12% annually. Thirani says shopping habits are shifting away from one-off occasion dressing toward more versatile, mix-and-match wardrobes, with casual ethnic wear and contemporary styles gaining ground. Seasonal and cultural moments are driving specific spikes, too: kids' IPL-themed T-shirt sales rose 150% year-over-year, and Janmashtami-linked purchases climbed 60%, trends Thirani expects to carry into the Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali shopping season. "The big bet this festive season is the ability to serve these increasingly diverse fashion needs at scale across India," he said.

## Gen Z, video commerce, and a different role than Myntra

Gen Z shoppers now make up nearly half of Flipkart Fashion's audience and are growing 25% year-over-year, a group Thirani describes as balancing trend experimentation with real price sensitivity. That's pushing Flipkart to invest in AI-driven personalization, video commerce, virtual try-ons and conversational shopping, as discovery shifts from search-led browsing to inspiration-led discovery through creators and video content. Quick commerce is adding another layer, too, with Flipkart Minutes now offering more than 7,000 fashion and accessory items, led by strong volumes in watches, bangles and bracelets. Thirani is careful to distinguish Flipkart Fashion's role from sibling platform Myntra within the Flipkart group, describing Flipkart Fashion as a "value x fashion" destination built to serve both affluent urban shoppers and what he calls aspirational Bharat, including increasingly fashion-forward Tier-II and Tier-III markets across India's East, North East, West and South regions.
